That could be worse. Would you try to fix your TV circuitry while it was
plugged in and switched on? Modern ATX power supplies keep minimal power
on the motherboard as long as they are plugged in. This leads to an
obvious risk to the system if parts are removed or replaced under these
conditions. You would probably end up causing more damage. So- make a
point of disconnecting it from mains and earthing the case where
possible. Also earth yourself to the case (preferably by wrist strap) to
prevent static from your clothing from frying delicate chips.
