[pchelpers] Re: computer won't start, get this message - need help asap

Hi Re-Na,

Monday, April 17, 2006, 11:46:38 PM, you wrote:

Her user profile may have gotten corrupted, resulting in Windows
creating a new profile. If this is the case, the old one would still
be there under "Documents and Settings" with the old name, and she'd
be able to just copy over her files and many of the settings.

Turning the computer off, while not recommended, doesn't usually have
such significant results; sounds like something else went wrong at
this point.

With modern computers, you may have to hold the button for several
seconds (up to about 10, although officially you're not supposed to
need to hold it for more than about 5; I think some of the chipset
vendors have trouble telling time) before the computer will turn off;
I'd try doing that before yanking the cord.

There's also Shift-Ctrl-ESC, which gives you the Task Manager, which
would let you shut down programs one by one. Oddly, sometimes you
can't shut down the computer, but you CAN log off, and THEN shut down
the computer.
