Hi Jackie
That tip was published in Lockergnome but later Chris
Pirillo, the author apologized for giving a tip that
doesn't work! Some gnomie sent the information that
this won't work.
Think about it. If one of the addresses in your email
list is not correct, that's the only one that bounced
back and not the others. I'd that happen to me several
times! <g>
One just need to be careful about attachments. The
Nimda worm doesn't even need an attachment to get to
work. Just using the preview pane is enough to get it
to worm itself into your registry and what else!
I'd got the SirCamA virus infecting my computer at
work without ever opening up a questionable
attachment. It spread via our mail server (Exchange
5.5) As we receive our email via our regional office
mail server, I guess some dummy must have opened up
that can of worm and thus spread it all over our
network. Our own mail server, webserver and testing
server and CDWriter server were all infected. Although
it's an old worm yet someone ignorant about viruses
and worms will just get you all into trouble.
I managed to clean up a couple of servers using
Norton's cleaning tool. But my own workstation had to
be reformatted as a repair of the OS didn't work. All
my .exe file were dead as the dodo! It happened only
after I rebooted. Didn't use to turn off my
workstation as it's running Win2k server.
Just to let you guys know no matter how careful you
are, if you're connected to the network, make sure
you've got your anti-virus up to date. By the way, I
didn't have any anti-virus installed on the Win2K
partition, only my Win98 partition! *sigh*! Goes to
show a careless move will give you lots of headache
and time wasted not to mention data loss!
Hope all your PCs are healthy and not wormy! Lots more
are discovered since Nimda. Check out sarc.com site.
Regards
Tonia
