I've watched all the traffic on this and it is all good except no-one except
John has suggested a fix!

Shutdown, turn off the power, open the pc case, (I always turn the mains off
at the wall but leave the plug IN - this ensures a continuous earth and
prevents static damage.  I'm not sure if this is applicable where Jackie
lives)
Remove the cd drive, open the drive - there will be 2 or 3 screws holding
one side or the other on.  Sometimes the screws are on the back or sides.
You will find that one cover comes off.  The laser mechanism is usually
accessable when the first cover comes off.  There is probably a metal plate
over the top of where the laser is.  This may need to be removed.

When you have the covers off, check for little bits of cd everywhere.

You said you have all the pieces except one small piece so you are very
lucky - I've seen them go into a million pieces and wreck the insides of the
drive.  Fortunately this doesn't happen very often, usually only with a cd
that has a crack in it or as Tim says, one that has warped.

Just as an aside, (and I think I've got this right), the recording speed of
cd-r is 1.2 metres/sec for 74 minute media (1.4 m/sec for 18 or 63 minute
media).  Since the earliest start point on a cd is 24.8mm from the centre,
the disc is spinning at 462 revs/minute to achieve this recording speed.
This means that a point on the edge of the cd is moving at about 2.9
metres/second.  Now, if you are reading this cd at 50x...........  well you
can all work out how fast the darn thing is going!!!

It is no wonder they may explode if they are damaged!
