That's the current version, so with "going back to earlier" you
apparently meant Thunderbird. No need to do that. If you get the new
version of the Calendar extension, which is now called Lightning, you
can use the newest Thunderbird version.

Nothing is gone, they're just not visible in the user interface due to
some minor problem or incorrect setting. All your personal data is safe
in the profile folder which is physically separate from the program
folder and not affected by program installations or uninstallations.

An alternative way to quickly find your profile folder is to simply use
the Win+f Search function to search your hard drive for bookmarks.html,
but be sure to search in hidden folders too. Then simply click on
Organise Bookmarks, File > Import.
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lost_bookmarks has detailed diagnostics for
the different possible causes and cures of the problem of usually only
seemingly lost, i.e. invisible bookmarks.

I wouldn't use an old backup because it will be missing anything you
added since. Simply repoint Firefox to the current bookmarks.html file
in your profile folder as explained above.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
