Seagate had a huge problem with firmware on 500GB and 1TB hard disks a few 
months ago. It would be wise to check if your drive is on that list.
Apparently they issued a firmware update but that only partially fixed the 
problem on some drives.

See if they will accept the drive back and issue you with a new one.
