Dells have proprietary power supplies so you can't put in a generic
motherboard nor can you put in a generic power supply (you'd have to
replace both at the same time).

Any system that isn't a standard minitower probably can't take a
generic motherboard.  Most low-profile systems, for example.

Other than that, I don't think most of the stuff out there is really
proprietary nowadays.

Perhaps you're thinking of laptops? About the only things that you can
replace with third-party items are memory and hard drive, no matter
who you buy the laptop from.
