John, you may remember that some time ago, I wrote about my HDD at bootup
showing either "boot disc failure" or "error in loading OS". We pondered about
what it may be but I said that if I hit the start button then a second or two
later the reset button, it booted OK. Well that pointed to the HDD going down.
However, since I put in a new MB and processor, I had another new HDD and took
the opportunity to install that too.
So I took the HDD that I thought was faulty and put it into another PC and low
and behold, the HDD boots first time every time, so whatever the problem was
that was causing the overheating or just plain shutdown under "extreme" hard
work, was also causing the problem with the HDD too.
My thoughts are the processor rather than the MB? Anyone any other ideas?
Billy

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
