I use Excel for almost every type of list nowadays, simply because I
can easily organize data in columns, and I can easily sort or filter
on any column. The free Calc which comes as part of OpenOffice
(www.OpenOffice.org) is very similar, and is highly compatible with
Excel data files (I'm not sure if they support Excel 2007 format yet,
but they do support 2003 and older).

I switched to spreadsheets for my lists after I realized how often I
was wanting to columnize and/or sort stuff.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
