From the WORD Help file it appears that sort is possible. I tried it
and it works. Sort is found in the Table pull down.

*Note* Microsoft Word stores the sort order, along with any
record-selection criteria, in the main document. The next time you open
the main document, Word will retrieve and sort the data records
<javascript:HelpPopup('wdtip9.hlp','wodefdatarecord');> according to the
query options you specified. (Note that if the data source is from
another program, Word sorts only the selected data records; if the data
source is in Word format, Word sorts /all/ the data records.) If you
want to change the sort order, repeat the procedure above. If you want
to permanently keep the data records in the specified order, save the
data source before you quit Word.
