Thanks for the tips, Scott. You mentioned a lot of things. I will buy
from ebay if I have to. I was just hoping to buy something in an actual
store because I can get it sooner and get started quicker. That was the
only reason. I still may buy from eBay if a better deal shows up.
The computer I'm trying to install this new operating system on is a
Pentium 4, 1.4 GHz and 512 MB ram. It appears the hard drive is
partitioned in two with a total of 80 gigs combined. In time I was
hoping to install another drive and add Linux to it. I almost
considered buying Vista except I didn't really want their Basic edition,
yet I haven't completely ruled it out. I'd ultimately like the Premium
edition more so, but they recommend 1 GHz for Premium, and only 512 for
Basic. I'm not sure if this machine's ram is upgradeable, but even if
it is, I don't really want to spend money upgrading the hardware. I
think XP might run faster than Vista on this system and I definitely
don't want a sluggish operating system. So I'm still deciding on that.
I do have Windows 2000 CD, also a Windows 95 CD. This site gave some
useful tips on how I might proceed with the install.

Since the machine currently has ME on it (no CD's included) and I have
no desire to keep any remnants of it, I might just simply format the
drive, then try installing XP on the clean drive, and insert the 2000 or
95 CD when prompted. It's true, I cannot install XP Home on top of
2000, but it looks like I can still use the CD when prompted as proof
that I have another version of Windows.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
