Ellen,
When I insert my CD for Windows 98 SE into my CD ROM drive it will go to a
screen that allows you to do different things to Windows. One of the options
to is to be able to add or delete certain features to Windows itself. If I
click on this option and allow my system to check itself as to what is
already installed, after finishing it brings up a list of what is installed
and what is available for installation. What you need to do is to
double-click on the name "Accessories" this will open up a list of
accessories available to you and one of them is for Word Pad. All you would
need to do is to click on the little box placing a check mark into the box
and then click on install. The Windows CD should do the rest. It may ask you
why you want to reinstall something that parts of it may already be there,
if so just go ahead and allow Windows to write over itself and you should
have a fresh install of Word Pad.

Thanks, Nigel,
it won't bring up the proper CD path. I tried that. it just comes up with
DRIVE.INF I think,
then if I Browse, it never offers the proper Wordpad option. After I ask it
to open it goes into a RUNDLL32 error. I don't have the CD copied onto my
puny 4Gig drive. I also browsed the hard drive. W98 was pre-installed. (I
have the disk) After killing the virus, I tried killing the RICHED.DLL, &
replacing it, but I was stuck with opening Word by a backdoor method - find
& open RICHED.DLL (with Wordpad), then Wordpad is open. At least it opened
then!
any other ideas - like what's the exact path on the CD? maybe I can type it
in & get there.
thanks
Ellen
