XP does not seem to require add-on drivers for mice, although some
vendors provide a CD.

You may have a "stuck" USB system, which I've seen entirely too many
times recently, and is not readily user-fixable.

Here are the steps:

1. Unplug the receiver for the wireless mouse. Restart the computer.

2. RIGHT-click "My Computer". Select "Properties". Go to the "Advanced"
tab. Click the "Environment Variables" button.

3. Add a new System variable with this name:
   devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices

4. Set the value of it to 1.

5. Back on the "System Properties" box, go to the "Hardware" tab, and
click the "Device Manager" button.

6. Click "View", "Show hidden devices". The list should suddenly show
more items. If it does not, something went wrong in step 3 or 4.

7. Look under "Human Interface Devices", "Mice and other pointing
devices", "Other devices", and "Universal Serial Bus controllers",
and remove any item which has a grayed-out icon, and remove or repair
anything which has an error symbol.

8. Restart the computer. After it has stabilized, plug the receiver
back in and see what happens.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
