Microsoft has a talent for creating confusion.
Windows Messenger is the same as MSN Messenger.
Windows NT, 2000, XP, and 2003 have a service called Messenger
service, which is used for system messages. Unfortunately, anyone on
the planet who knows your IP address can send you a message using
Messenger service. There are programs that can send out messages to
thousands of computers per minute. To disable this, go to Control
Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, RIGHT-click on Messenger, and
select Properties, click the Stop button, then set the Startup type to
Manual.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
