XP comes with a firewall, 2000 does not.

There seem to be problems with the latest service pack for IE 6
(people with XP, note that this is included in the latest XP service
pack), so if you are able to back up to an older version, try that.
The problem that I know of is with Quickbooks, but it occurs to me
that it the problem may show up elsewhere also.

Tell us what other software you have installed. Look though
Start->Programs and through Start->Settings->Add/Remove Software, and
list what you have (but don't bother with the ten zillion Win2K
patches); one of them might trigger an idea for one of us.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
