Cable-select means that the position on the cable determines whether
the drive is master or slave, just as with a floppy drive.

The rule appears to have changed with the 80-pin cables, so that they
can handle either system, although I haven't taken the time to be
certain. I've been continuing to put new systems together with master
and slave jumpers, whereas a co-worker says that he always uses the
cable-select jumper.
