Karl,
I have a few questions? First did you ever finish the download? I suggest
that you delete anything left over from the download. I would not even
download 22 MB's with DSL. I suggest that you get Microsoft to send you a CD
of the changes. Now getting to your pesky modem. Once you boot up, have you
checked the hardware configuration to make sure that the modem is not there?
If it is installed does it work? Also to repair any damage to your registry,
you can use your backup of the registry. Go to Windows 2K help to see how
you can replace your current registry with your backup. Make sure that you
use a backup that was created before your download. This should correct any
defects in the registry if there are any. Last of all, check to make sure
that the connections to your modem are clean and tight, and that the card
has not worked itself loose from its slot. Please let us know if you need
more help.

Subject: [pchelpers] Upset Modem
Hi,
Am running a Dell Laptop (PIII 850, 256Mb, Win2kPro)
and having problems with my modem card becoming
inoperable each time I close down. Card is a Dynalink
56k PCMCIA.
Problem started when i got some way through the
massive download of the Win2k SP2 and the download
stopped responding.(I know, stupid to try to download
a 22mb update over a Dial-up connection, but when
that's all you've got, can't be helped.) I left the
window open for 20 minutes to see if it might start
again, but to no avail.
I opened another browser window to check to see if the
connection had dropped, but it hadn't. Tried then to
close the 2K SP2 browser window, but to no avail. Went
to Task Manager and closed the Window from
there.Closed the machine for the night.
Opened machine next day, tried to connect, but no go.
Error message came back that modem not responding. Had
to uninstall, reinstall, restart, then update drivers
from CD and restart again. Works fine whenever I do
that, but I shouldn't have to do that every time I
start the machine.
I'm guessing the download may have been halfway
through changing some registry settings but I'm not
experienced enough to be changing anyhting there.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Regards.
Karl B
