Yep to all that John says - much much more ram is really the only answer to
everything, especially if you are (finally) going to go to xp!!! (Sorry,
couldn't help it). If you are using W98, then it (98) doesn't benefit much
at all from any more than about 128 megs of ram BUT, any image application
will love you for more ram. If you can, get up to a gig of ram for any
image editing software. I've got half a gig in my W98 machine at work and
it really is far better at anything than the old one was with 128 megs. I
use Corel for all my imaging stuff and it is heaps better than it was.
Yep to the CD and CD-R on separate ports. Put your primary hard disk and CD
Reader on IDE1 and your secondary hard disk and CD Writer on IDE2. This
makes cd creation (from hard disk files) and cd copying much less likely to
suffer from bus contention. Also, get a "burn proof" writer. I'm really
pleased with my BTC 40-12-40 drive. They now have a 48 speed writer. Be
careful with cd media. I've found that some cd's claiming to be 32 speed
won't write at any speed faster than 8 times. I use Imation 40x now because
they seem to be the most reliable, and they are only a dollar each here.
Happy holidays
Nigel

simply looking for more discussion. I enjoy hashing these things out &
hearing different ideas. Nigel?

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
