Hi Scott
are these any help?:

2. Once client PCs have Office installed from an Administrative
Installation Point, then all subsequent updates, repairs, installs must
be done from the Installation Point. You cannot do these tasks from the
Office CD.
Note: Microsoft now supports updating client Office installations that
were originally installed from an Administrative Installation Point to
be updated with the client version of an Office update. In the past
this was not supported, but because of synchronization issues some
organizations were having with Office updates, MS now supports this.
However, like most Microsoft products, there are caveats to everything,
so you need to read about this first. See this web page:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/xp/journ/Cliupdt.htm
3. Before you update an administrative installation point, make sure no
users are using the Office installation share. If a file on the share
is in use during the upgrade process, a newer version of that file is
not copied to the installation point.

How to Create a Log File When You Update an Administrative Installation
of Office XP
Unlike the client updates, a log file is not created by default for
updating administrative installations of Office XP. To create a log
file, after you download and run the IExpress package to extract the
admin files, run the update with a command line similar to the following
msiexec /a admin path\MSI File /p local path\MSP File SHORTFILENAMES=1
/L*V C:\verbose.txt
where admin path is the path to your administrative install point for
Office XP,
where MSI File is the MSI database package for the Office XP product
(for example, Proplus.msi),
where local path is the path to the extracted path files (for example,
C:\adminUpdate), and
where MSP File is the name of the admin update's patch file (for
example, Winword_admin.msp). For more information about updating an
administrative installation of Office XP, click the following article

Office XP
Troubleshooting
If you cannot understand the problem from the Ohotfix.exe file or the
Windows Installer log files, and you are still having problems updating
your installation, attempt to repair the Office installation. To do
this, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Double-click the icon for the Office XP program that you want to update.
4. In the Microsoft Office XP Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Repair
Office and then click Next.
5. In the Reinstall/Repair Microsoft Office XP dialog box, click
Reinstall Office, and then click Finish.
6. When the repair process is finished, run the public update again.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
