The first time IE7 or IE8 is started up, it asks several questions.

For IE7 (http://runonce.msn.com/runonce3.aspx), the questions are:
  Keep current default search provider?
  Use phishing filter?
  Use ClearType?
  Change Language?
  Join Customer Experience Program?

For IE8 the questions are:
  Enable/disable suggested sites
  yes/no express settings
    Keep current default search provider?
    (use suggested sites from this provider?)
    download updates for search providers?
    Use accelerators?
    Use Smartscreen filter?
    Use compatibility view updates?

Some of these settings will affect speed and how websites work.

The phishing filter or SmartScreen filter will probably slow down the
loading of web pages, as the UTLs are checked to be sure that they are
not malicious. I suspect the SmartScreen filter will slow things down
more the Phishing filter, since it appears to checks more.

ClearText will slow things down slightly (you probably won't notice),
but I think computers with Aero and/or Windows 7 *might* eliminate the
difference.

Suggested Sites might slow down page fetching very slightly.

I personally turn off all accelerators. If you don't see a need for
them, you might do the same.

You will almost certainly want Compatibility view updates to be ON.
I'm not sure why someone would want it off. If a site doesn't work
right in IE8, then perhaps you havecompatibility view turned off, or
don't have compatibility view updates turned on.

I don't know how to re-run the wizard in IE8 without going to Internet
Options, Advanced, Reset.
