I had USB HP cd/rw external , and Maxtor USB external Hard drives I had
the same problem they ran very hot -- and they did burn out. For me I no
longer buy external hard drives, modems, or external DVD writers because I
use them a lot and the cost is high replacing them , I usually buy internal
hard drives- I put extra fans in my system to keep my system cool. Probably
external hard drive is okay but if that goes there goes your data - you
might have to back everything up on cds. There is probably someone on this
list that could recommend a good stable backup system without costing an arm
and a leg . Jackie

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
