You know I having the same problem.
I got a Centon SpinDrive 4GB USB Hard Drive.
Its about 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 square with its own usb plug like a thumb drive.

When I first got it everything was fine. You plug it in and the computer 
went ding dong
and a drive letter showed up in "My Computer" and you treated it like a 
hard-drive.

Now its goes ding dong but no drive letter. Not even in the "Computer 
Disk Management"

But when I click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon it is listed in 
the list of USB
devices that is running.

When clicking on the "Properties" it list is as an unknown device and 
unreadable.

It works find in my son's computer.
