To be strictly correct, the Internet is a vast network. Such things are 
designed to be connected to in various ways. The basic dial up 
connection has no fire wall by itself. Software firewalls can help, but 
they are not 'bullet proof'. Infections are designed to sneak into such 
things. This is even more true of broadband without a firewall. In this 
case traffic is full volume with no protection. Your files can be 
exposed to many without your consent. Were you aware of this?

Whether it is wireless does make a difference. A network cable to a 
router cannot be penetrated wirelessly. Wireless ones can be by anyone 
within signal range. They can become part of your system, even stealing 
your bandwidth to get free Internet for themselves (you pay). There have 
been prosecutions for this. Some refer to them as 'drive by surfers' 
because it could be done from a laptop in a car outside your house.

A wire may be less convenient, but it could also be wiser???
