Scott,
John mentioned that it is possible for a modern notebook to have a convection
/ conductive cooling system without a fan. My notebook was on so long that
the unit would have burned itself out if the fan was the only way of cooling
it. Computers is not a full time job and I do not want to go to a repair shop
and waste everyone time if the unit is functioning normally,
So is a fan mandatory on a double layer DVD drive and USB 2 which was
manufactured in November 2007? - Gerald

It sounds like your tech support person simply didn't know what she was
talking about -- which isn't unusual, since many of them are hired off the
street and given a cheat-sheet to go by.
The laptop that I'm using now has an intake on the bottom and blows air out
the back through a large-ish heat exchanger; it takes up a third of the
space in the back.

Subject: [pchelpers] Toshiba Satellite L45 with battery removed
First I think John is correct that this model dissipates heat by
surface convection conduction. and not fan like the Wugnet Forum
said. .
With battery removed the unit does not get so hot and there is
no power drain on the battery.
According to the label on the cardboard box the unit was
manufactured in November 2007. It is not out of date at all.
I have found over the years that manufacturers technical support
is out of touch with the corporation computer design engineers. One
Toshiba tech support had me go into msconfig and disable the
entire Toshiba OS. Then I was to access the web. A tragic
joke. I had her have me restore the OS.
Do you agree that without the battery and on external AC
adapter the unit will stay cooler? I gave up on Wugnet and
Toshiba except when it is obvious the unit needs repair and I
need an authorized case number. - Gerald
