That's Li-Ion, short for LIthium ION.

designed to operate safely within their normal operating voltage but become 
unstable if charged to higher voltages. When charging above 4.30V, the cell 
causes plating of metallic lithium on the anode; the cathode material 
becomes an oxidizing agent, loses stability and releases oxygen. 
Overcharging causes the cell to heat up. If left unattended, the cell could 
vent with flame."

Most custom (as opposed to the standard AA, etc.) batteries nowadays are 
either LiIon or Lithium polymer.

LiIon batteries should be kept charged for longest life.

The sysop feels the Lion battery  (what's that?) cannot be overcharged.  And 
the battery on the shelf  will lose energy and not be available when I need 
it.

  Toshiba owners manual states overcharging with shorten battery life.

  As I previously stated there is only flimsy registration with Wugnet and

The only reason I can think of for that is to prevent over charging, so
why does the sysop answer this way?
