Unlikely. Parallel scan of the drive using a clean machine with
bitdefender 10 or similar should handle it, You need to know how to hook
it up to another machine for the scan.

Only if the operating system is corrupt.

It could be the adapter. If it is, you will get no turn on at all (or
running on batteries for a laptop). Try another adapter if you can.
Virus infestation tends to slow system performance rather than stop it
turning on. A few older ones would shut it down, but if you got that far
it more or less proves the power supply works.

John,
My notebook only has USB 2 ports and no parallel or serial ports. You did not
think that AVG would restore the registry and offered unexplained advice on
more software and cost. The notebook is still under warranty.
Instead of a complicated procedure wouldn't it be easier to save the data files
to DVD and reinstall the notebook OS? I did get a new electric adapter today
so if that works I have to install AVG and give that a try. The registry may
not be affected at all.
