[pchelpers] Toshiba L45 notebook - multiple problems

Hi all,
 
My Toshiba has multiple problems.
 
McAfee discovered Trojans and at this list advice I uninstalled McAfee on the 
notebook and installed AVG  (which comes by subscription now) with an extended 
download plan.
 
AVG discovered at least 20 Trojan and viruses but the computer died and Toshiba 
feels it is the AC adapter which I believe has a transformer.  I ordered a new 
AC adapter from a on line company which I have to pick up at UPS tomorrow.
 
Questions:
 
Will AVG removed the Trojans and viruses and correct the registry?
 
Would it be best to reinstall the operating system?
 
Would a dead computer probably be the AC adapter and not viruses?
