I found an old message from PcCowboy praising Hotpop + Thunderbird for
this. Maybe he could tell us more about that.
But the answer is probably "no" unless you are a paying Hotmail
member. Apparently Microsoft realized that many people were starting
to use Hotmail only as a spam filter. Therefore MS wants to at least
force people who are doing this to use an MS program like OE to
download their Hotmail mail:
"Microsoft has recently decided that only paying members will be able
access Hotmail using outside services such as Hotmail Popper. Hotmail
Popper will continue working with a "Hotmail Plus" (or equivalent MSN)
account." ( www.boolean.ca/hotpop )
But you can of course access your Hotmail with your browser. There
might also be the possibility of automatically forwarding all mail you
receive at Hotmail to a non-Hotmail email address. Then it's easy to
download with Thunderbird.

Here is more info and links to programs that maybe do the trick:

Can I access my Netscape WebMail or Hotmail accounts through Thunderbird?
No. Netscape WebMail and Hotmail use proprietary protocols. To access
WebMail directly through an e-mail client requires you to use Netscape
6+ with AIM; to do so with Hotmail requires either Microsoft Outlook
or Outlook Express. There are also freeware applications available
that will let you do the same thing, such as Hotmail Popper.
Another example is Gotmail, which is a utility to non-interactively
download email from a Hotmail account. It can download messages from
all folders, messages from certain folders, or new messages only.
There are options to delete downloaded messages or mark them as read.
Gotmail can forward messages to other email addresses or save them as
local mbox-style mailboxes.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
