500 kB isn't a lot nowadays, especially if you move mail from one
folder to another. You could be going over the limit very easily. If
you have it set to sort mail to folders for you, then one or more
messages totalling 500 kB or more would be received, moved to another
folder, then the inbox would get compacted, then you'd be able to look
at your email.
