Version 2.0.0.5 came very recently, and updates are apparently sent out
one region at a time to not overload the servers, so it could be that
your automatic update would have worked correctly soon.

You can turn it back on once we've determined whether this is the cause
of plain text messages looking like remote images in Thunderbird.

I would seriously consider not turning it back on because it provides no
extra protection and can cause a lot of minor and major problems.

Most emails with virus attachments are spam and automatically eliminated
by TB anyhow. Of the ones that still make it into the inbox, most are
still spam and it's best to train TB further so that it gets better at
finding similar future ones. By letting your antivirus program mess
around in the inbox, you are depriving yourself of the opportunity to
train TB better and possibly causing inbox corruption.

At the least, it causes a discrepancy between the content of the inbox
and its index file. If your antivirus deletes mail that is still listed
in the index files, it's no wonder that TB has trouble showing the
contents of the inbox correctly. This is probably the cause of TB using
lots of CPU power and slowing down itself or locking up the computer.

What antivirus do you have?

If you do decide to turn email scanning back on, it's very important to
have a check mark there.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
