I could tell you how web pages do it, but why not just use Thunderbird 
for messages as it was intended? Forcing it into email produces varying 
reactions in different email programs. In some it shows as html text 
commands. In others it looks like a web page. In addition, the result 
depends on the settings in each case. In one case, I copied the location 
of an image on a local site by right clicking in Firefox, then choosing 
"copy image location".

Copying that link into the message may not show the image, but it will 
if clicked on.

It is more likely that in order to show images when a message arrives, 
they will need to be embedded in the message structure itself. Going 
further can be complicated, such as this code provided for Outlook:
