It sounds like compacting is not working correctly. There is a fairly 
easy solution to this for which there pretty good instructions on
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Compacting_folders#Compacting_doesn.27t_seem_to_work
that i won't copy here because they are easier to understand with the 
webpage's layout. Let me know if something is not clear so that i can 
explain it better (and then improve that page :-) )
