Try this on the screen that contains your inbox:
View > Message Body As > Original HTML

You might also try:
View > Display Attachments Inline (checked)
I don't have this checked myself, (for tighter security), and I don't 
have the kind of problems you described. Yet I found a forum where 
someone was having your problem and this is what was suggested.
