You raise several issues here:
1) What protection can you get for your PC information?
2) How much do you need it?

There are several ways to protect information from prying eyes that may
have no right to it.
a) Encryption (code it up so it's unreadable)
b) Save it off the system and delete your copy
c) Use a firewall (to prevent outside snooping)
I use the free version of Zonealarm and find it works well enough.

As for how much you need it, that's a personal decision. It depends on
how much personal or confidential information you keep on your system.
Most of us have at least some information of that kind (passwords,
address book data, documents etc). In some cases though you won't need
it. For instance, I use a laptop for clearing my web mail. Nothing
personal is stored there and there is no email downloaded, so I see no
reason to use things like this for such a machine.
