Ekhart,
Thank you for the detail instructions. I can use the link that you gave me for
my desktop. I have an Ethernet / wifi connection - Ethernet for the desktop
and wifi for the laptop. I use the laptop more frequently so there is
increased probability for an infection.
Gerald

Hi Gerald and anyone else interested in SpywareBlaster

You apparently didn't always click on the link(s) to the free version on
the page(s) that opened up when clicking on the link John sent. As John
explained, the program is free, so it would have been good to come back
for help if you couldn't find the free version. In case someone else is
looking for the free version, the direct download link is
http://download.cnet.com/3001-8022_4-10196637.html?spiÌdb724e962a1ba4c341ac0eb38df4f7&part=dl-SpywareBl
If you want to learn how to deal with similar situations in the future
and want to learn how to navigate typical free download pages that try
to convince you to get the pay version, here's the walkthrough:
Clicking on the link John sent, which was
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com , produces a page that has two buttons
that say "free download". Clicking on the one in the middle at the top
opens the page http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.html which has
two choices 1) Continue Download and 2) the so-called trialpay version,
which (as explained there) is the version that has the autoupdate
function and normally costs $9.95 but is free if you agree to buy or try
some other product whose ad money pays for the pay version of the
product (in this case SpywareBlaster) that you were originally downloading.
Clicking on choice 1 produces the page
http://download.cnet.com/SpywareBlaster/3000-8022_4-10196637.html?part=dl-SpywareBl&subj=dl&tag=button&cdlPid852839
which has the button Download Now in the middle which brings you to
http://download.cnet.com/3001-8022_4-10196637.html?spiÌdb724e962a1ba4c341ac0eb38df4f7&part=dl-SpywareBl
Clicking on the link John sent, which was
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com , and on the second button that say
"free download" in the middle at the left opens the page
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html which has a big Free
Download button on the top right, which takes you to the same page as
above http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.html
Since you seem to have clicked on neither the free version nor the
trialpay version (unless you also bought another product that you didn't
mention and that happened to cost as much as the pay version called
Pro), it seems you clicked on the link to the Pro version that has
autoupdate. As explained on the page
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbautoupdate.html that you got before
clicking on the button secure buy now, 9.95 is a license for one year.
On the other hand, you claim that you avoided paying an "extra $9.95 for
automatic update", so perhaps you bought some other product in an
attempt to avoid paying for SpywareBlaster. In either case you now have
a 1-year subscription to the version of SB that automatically updates.

It does not run in the background. It prevents so-called killbits in the
registry, which prevent the malware (nasties) it knows about from being
installed or from running (if any malware is already installed). I'm not
familiar with the pay version. The free version requires you to click on
"enable all protection" after updating manually, but maybe the pay
version does both steps automatically. You can easily see whether all
protection is enabled by looking at the summary on the page that opens
up when you start the program.

If this is a question, yes, it doesn't interfere with your antivirus and
other antispyware you may have.
> Can I put the email link on both my ethernet desktop and
> wi fi laptop?
Not sure what you mean with an email link. This normally means an
Internet link in an email, in other words the address of an Internet
page; clicking this link in the email opens the Internet page. Do you
mean the link John sent? There is no need to do that.
Do you instead mean a shortcut to the program? In that case, yes, you
can put that on the desktop of the computer you installed it on. Since
you used the word "both", you apparently mean a second computer. That
won't work; trying to click on a shortcut that refers to another
computer will not work unless the same program is installed a second
time on the other computer in the corresponding identical location.

Are you saying you thought you had to pay for AVG and did pay for it and
are now nevertheless using the free version? Why would you do that? If
your subscription has ended, you do not need to pay for a new one. You
can switch to the free version by uninstalling the pay version and then
installing the free one.
