[pchelpers] Re: SpinRite or Scandisk

If you are interested in wise methods and safe performance, then run
scandisk about once a week as a practice. In addition, avoid things like
using the wall switch or the power button to shut down windows unless
there is no alternative. If you have to do that, it is time to run
maintainance programs anyway. A useful sequence to follow might be like
this:
1)Restart in safe mode if you can (F8) during startup on many systems.
2)Run your antivirus/spyware utilities over the system to remove things
that could interfere.
3)Run scandisk set to fix errors standard first (thorough if needed due
to disk surface/file error concerns).
4)Run defrag afterwards (DON'T defrag a disk with possible errors on it-
it makes things worse).
5)Run system file checker (SFC at the command prompt) to repair/replace
system files.
6)Run regclean or one of the better registry utilities to remove the
cludge from registry.
7)If necessary, reboot with a win 98 or other suitable disk for your
system, and type FDISK /MBR at the prompt to fix the boot sector.

Anyone want to add to that?
Which of these haven't you done?
