I'm going from past experience here- a case of a dual level DVD that
arrived new and installed on an XP system. The system didn't see it
properly until firmware updates from the manufacturer were downloaded
and installed. It was something to do with the advanced hardware (post
dating XP). After doing that, the drive behaved normally.
The term 'firmware' is defined here:

The basic problem was errors in communication between the drive and
operating system. The hardware was updated by the download. I'm not sure
which piece of hardware was updated, since there are a few possibilities
here, however, you did update the motherboard, right?
