Are you using Vista? In that case, one possible simple solution is
running www.ccleaner.com, and that's a good idea on all operating
systems anyhow.
If that doesn't speed up Firefox, the problem is most probably caused by
some misbehaving extension(s). Simply disable them all and see if the
problem is gone. If you have a lot, try disabling first one half and
then the second half of your list (Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions). More
