My apologies about SFC. I had to do some digging to turn up the truth. 
It apparently works in 98 and XP but not in ME.

One thing is not clear from your message. When you say you removed drive 
D: - did you remove one of these:
a) A CD/DVD from a drive or
b) A partition from your disk or
c) A hard drive from your computer or
d) A Zip or other re-writeable disk from a custom drive?
Each of these has a different meaning and raises its own issues.

As for appplications, they can always be re-installed if you need them.
