I've had and seen multiple cases of problems with PS/2 mice and
keyboards (especially on Packard Hells, they have/had a "fuse" that
frequently blows when plugging in a keyboard); either pluuging in while on,
or plugging into the wrong connector (are interchangeable on some
laptops that have only a single PS/2 connector). About the only
problems that I recall seeing with video cards is when they're not
seated properly, and plugging a monitor cable in unseats in or reseats
it, etc.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
