[pchelpers] Re Windows Power Toos and TweakUI

I had a look at some of the Windows XP Power tools, of which the TweakUI =
is
one, and had a couple of problems. Be warned, as they are not supported =
by
Microsoft.

1 - The Tweak UI on the Microsoft web site is a 64 bit version and hence
normal users without a 64 bit processor cannot run it. I think they =
posted
the wrong version.

2 - The Task Switcher is very fancy - gives a preview thmbnail of the =
open
Windows as you alt/Tab between them. I have to say it is pretty sloppy =
in
responding and seems a bit buggy - some programs will take a real long =
time
to AltTab to and it is not consistent - like 2-3-4 seconds which is not
really good. Also Window/screen repainting after the switch seems buggy =
-
some windows do not repaint correctly. Using it and liking it but is is
twitchy and I might dump it.

3 - Virtual Desktop manager is powerful - at last Windows users can see
multiple desktops like X-Windows and linux users have for years, useful =
if
you have piles of stuff open.

4 - Taskbar magnifier gives a small area in the task bar that shows a =
small
magnified area of screen where the mouse pointer is. Nice gimmic if you
need this.

If you have problems, you might need to uninstall them.

General comment about Windows XP
The only real Windows XP bug I have noticed is a timing one when opening =
a
new window or maximising a previously open one from the task bar - =
sometimes
Windows XP gets confused which is the foreground window, and the one =
that is
highlighted on the task bar is not actually at the front on the desktop. =
 I
think it is a timing thing as it seems to be when one is typing or =
clicking
as the window is being opened. When this happens, the offending window
usually ends up at the far right end of the ALT/Tab list as if it was =
the
one looked at longest ago. Anyone else noticed these?

Find and download a copy of TweakUI from Microsoft's site; it has an =
option
to hide control panel icons that you don't want. It shouldn't be hard =
to
find; go to http://www.microsoft.com and type "TweakUI" in the search =
box.
I'll leave the rest as an exercise. :)

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
