Years ago when I had this error it was because I had a screen saver
enabled. When I would leave the room and the screen saver would come
on, it was a real pain during ScanDisk.
I do remember at other times I would run it (ScanDisk) in safe mode when
I had issues with it.
But it was so long ago, that's all I remember. (It wasn't WinME, but
the scenario was the same.)
