that's how I do it: I re-start the computer, and while it is coming up, I tap
the F8 key, which will bring me to the screen that gives the choices of how I
want to start the computer, for instance in safe mode, or go back to the last
setting that worked. It is so long ago that I had Windows 98, I do not remember
how it was there, but I think it was the same.
