I haven't seen this happen under newer versions of Windows.

In addition to John's suggestion and George's suggestion, I used to
have a REG file which would run defrag or scandisk before Windows
started up.  Let me see if I can find it...

Ok, here it is attached. There are 3 sets of files each for scandisk
and defrag; try one at a time to see which works. Just double-click
on a reg file, or RIGHT-click on an INF file and select Install. Then,
restart the computer. The scandisk or defrag should start
automatically BEFORE the desktop appears. If it does not, try the next
file.

If anyone else wants the files, let me know and I'll send a copy.
