".DOC" has become a relatively generic file extension. It covers .DOC
files that Wordpad can handle, but it also covers .DOC files that Word
can handle but Wordpad cannot.
HTML, RTF, and TXT should all be compatible with any program that
knows those formats. Note that you can take a .RTF file and rename it
to .DOC, and both Wordpad and Word will still be able to open it,
which should tell you something about how meaningless the extension
has become.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
