There are some alternatives. You can make changes without logging in by 
going to:
http://www.modecideas.com/
which brings up the list page with a handy form you can use to set 
vacation, digest, subscribe, unsub etc by putting your email in the form 
and selecting one. It then requests the change by email. At the bottom 
of the page is a link to the list archives. There are messages going 
back years on all subjects. Every time a message is posted, it is 
updated, and it has a search feature. That's not going to fill up your 
inbox.

Of course, there are also filters/rules depending on which email program 
you use. They neatly send relevant mail to the desired folder and even 
sort it by subject, sender etc. Learning some of these tricks could 
really help you here.
