That may be related to your problem and should in any case be solved
because it also means that the program is not correctly registered in
the Windows registry. What happens when you try to uninstall the normal
way?
With "manually removing", you apparently mean deleting the program
folder from C:\Program Files. I guess you realise that leaves TB's
entries in the Windows registry and makes Windows (and a new installer
package of TB) believe the old version is still installed, so you'll
need to run a registry cleaner after any manual uninstalling.
I suggest uninstalling again and then installing into a clean folder to
eliminate problems caused by a buggy installation. Before you uninstall,
restart Windows and use Windows Task Manager's Processes tab to make
sure that thunderbird.exe is not running in the background.
After uninstalling, delete the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird
folder and run CCleaner.

Sounds like you have a special theme in Windows; do all your programs
have this color combination?

It seems this second problem was fixed by "Check for new messages at
startup" in the user interface, but it may be that the first problem is
caused by some incorrect setting in about:config and/or the user.js or
prefs.js files.
I don't know much about any of these, but i do know it's a good idea to
stay away from them unless absolutely necessary. In the early days of
TB, many options that are easily available now in the UI had to be
manually added to these files, and anything in there will override the
settings you choose in the UI. This means that TB can be customised even
today in much more detail than in the UI but that any old setting can
become problematic if and when changes are made in TB's default settings.
Did you ever make any changes in those files or about:config dealing
with delete behavior or "show next message" behavior? More info at
http://kb.mozillazine.org/User.js I'll try to help you find the relevant
setting, but i couldn't find any relevant threads in the TB support
forum at http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=39 You'll
probably get a faster answer by asking there than if i search around for
it in old discussions or the knowledge base.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
