I looked around in about:config but I didn't find anything that was
clearly for manipulating "delete" or "show next message" behavior so I
left things as they were.

I compacted all folders about five days ago. Should I be compacting more
often than that?

Ek, I didn't realize I was going to end up feeling like this but I've
got a lot going on right now and I really don't have the mental stamina
it takes to get to the bottom of this right now. I sincerely appreciate
all the time and effort you have put into this, but since it is more of
an annoyance than a real problem I'd rather not waste any more of your
time with this. Thanks so much for trying so hard to help. Please
forgive me for that part of your time that I've already wasted.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
