If XP can see it, that's half the problem. Have him select a driver
for it, manufaturer name "(Standard port types)", and model "Printer
Port" or "ECP Printer Port", and see if that seems to work.
I ran into a simlar problem a year or so ago, with an older non-PNP
add-on printer port that wasn't detected at all by Windows XP (might
have been Win2K); had to manually add a printer port device and tell
it what I/O port and IRQ # to use. The hard part was that I had no
idea what port and IRQ it was using. Luckily, when I'd first installed
the card, even more years ago, I'd written it down, and the guy still
had that paper, so I didn't have to hunt it down the hard way.
