When I did the second install of the OS I looked to see where the
drivers the system was using were from. They were all Microsoft drivers.
I have the drivers for the chipset installed. I didn't think of getting
a driver for the CPU. I will do that next.

I got Driver Magician. I didn't know there were so many drivers in a
working system. Driver magician is only showing 3 drivers as not
provided by Microsoft. Those are the graphics controller, the CPU to AGP
driver and the AOC monitor driver. Apparently the other drivers I
thought I installed didn't get installed. The problem happened with
Microsoft's version of these three drivers also.

That sounds promising.

The system worked perfectly with Win98SE on it. It's just since I put XP
on it that it is not working right.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
